The feature arrives amid findings that nearly half of LinkedIn's longer posts may be fully machine-written.
LinkedIn's new tool allowing users to flag suspected AI-generated posts has proven unexpectedly popular, drawing over one million clicks since its launch on July 30th, according to the platform's chief product officer. The button, tucked inside the three-dot menu on any post, lets community members signal when content feels artificially generated.
The feature's rollout was prompted in part by research from AI detection firm Pangram, which found that roughly 41 percent of long-form LinkedIn posts showed signs of being entirely AI-written — a figure that drew widespread attention when reported earlier this summer. Alongside the flagging tool, LinkedIn has also upgraded its internal classifiers to better detect machine-generated content and quietly removed a feature that reportedly encouraged greater AI usage in posts.
LinkedIn's experiment in crowdsourced AI content moderation is off to a striking start. The professional networking platform says more than one million users have already tapped its new 'flag as AI-generated' button since it went live at the end of July — a pace that suggests the feature tapped into deep-seated frustration among users who feel the feed has become overrun with hollow, algorithmically produced posts.
The button was introduced by LinkedIn's chief product officer Hari Srinivasan alongside a broader set of measures aimed at curbing so-called 'AI slop' — a colloquial term for low-effort, mass-produced AI content that prioritizes volume over genuine insight. Complementing the user-facing flag, LinkedIn also deployed upgraded internal detection classifiers and removed an existing feature that critics said was nudging users toward generating more AI text in the first place.
The context behind these moves is notable. AI detection company Pangram had analyzed LinkedIn's content and found that approximately 41 percent of the platform's long-form posts were flagged as fully AI-generated — a statistic that went viral and put pressure on LinkedIn to act. Whether those detection figures are perfectly accurate is debatable, but they reflected a sentiment many users already held anecdotally.
Why it matters: LinkedIn occupies a unique space where professional reputation is currency. Unlike social platforms built around entertainment, LinkedIn users rely on the feed for job leads, industry insight, and networking — making the dilution of authentic content particularly costly. If AI-generated filler erodes trust in what people read there, the platform's core value proposition suffers. The rapid adoption of the flagging tool shows that users are eager for agency in shaping what they see, and it puts pressure on LinkedIn — and similar platforms — to treat AI content transparency as a genuine priority rather than an afterthought.
Looking ahead, the real test will be what LinkedIn actually does with those millions of flags. Crowdsourced signals are only useful if they feed into meaningful consequences — whether that means reduced algorithmic reach for flagged posts, clearer labeling, or account-level patterns triggering review. The platform hasn't fully detailed that pipeline yet, leaving open questions about whether this becomes a powerful moderation lever or simply a cathartic button that changes very little.
