LG’s new OLED breakthrough can boost display lifespans
LG Display has introduced a next-generation OLED manufacturing technique called FLiPP that does away with the fine metal mask traditionally used in panel production. The result is displays that are brighter, more power-efficient, longer-lasting, and potentially manufacturable at virtually any size.
LG Display announced a novel OLED production method called FLiPP — short for FMM-Less innovative Pixel Patterning — at the IMID 2026 conference in August. The technology eliminates the fine metal mask, a precision stencil-like component used in conventional RGB OLED manufacturing to deposit light-emitting materials into individual pixels.
Removing that component addresses several longstanding bottlenecks in OLED production. Traditional fine metal masks are difficult to scale, limiting how large panels can realistically be made while maintaining accuracy. FLiPP reportedly sidesteps those constraints, enabling displays that are simultaneously brighter, more energy-efficient, more durable, and theoretically unrestricted in size — a combination that could meaningfully change how OLED screens are built and where they can be used.
LG Display took the wraps off a significant leap in screen technology at the IMID 2026 industry conference, revealing a manufacturing process it calls FLiPP, or FMM-Less innovative Pixel Patterning. The company described it as a 'dream' next-generation approach to OLED panel production, signaling just how much it believes this could reshape the display industry.
At the heart of the innovation is the removal of the fine metal mask, a thin perforated metal sheet that has been a cornerstone of RGB OLED manufacturing for years. That mask acts like a stencil, guiding where light-emitting organic materials are deposited to form individual red, green, and blue pixels. While effective, the FMM introduces real-world limitations: it is difficult to align precisely at large scales, prone to sagging or distortion, and contributes to material waste during deposition.
By eliminating the FMM entirely, LG Display says its FLiPP process produces panels that outperform conventional OLEDs across several key metrics simultaneously — higher peak brightness, reduced power consumption, extended operational lifespan, and far fewer restrictions on panel dimensions. That last point is particularly notable, since size scalability has historically been one of OLED's competitive weaknesses compared to LCD technology.
Why it matters: OLED displays already dominate the premium end of televisions, smartphones, and laptops, but manufacturing costs and size constraints have slowed broader adoption. If FLiPP delivers on its promises, it could accelerate OLED's expansion into larger-format screens and new product categories, while simultaneously making existing form factors cheaper to produce and better performing. That would put pressure on competing display technologies like mini-LED LCD and microLED.
LG Display has not yet detailed a commercial production timeline, and breakthrough manufacturing announcements often take years to reach consumer products at scale. Still, the unveiling at a major industry conference suggests the technology is progressing beyond pure research, and rivals will almost certainly be watching closely.
