Do you really need an antivirus app on your Android?
Most Android users don't require dedicated antivirus applications, as Google's built-in security features handle the majority of threats. However, certain user groups — such as those who frequently sideload apps or use older devices — may benefit from additional protection layers.
A common question among smartphone users is whether third-party antivirus software is necessary on Android devices. The short answer for most people is no. Google has steadily reinforced Android's native defenses over the years, including Google Play Protect, which continuously scans installed apps for malicious behavior. The operating system also benefits from regular security patches and sandboxing techniques that isolate apps from one another. That said, there are notable exceptions. Users who download apps from outside the official Play Store, those running outdated Android versions no longer receiving security updates, or individuals in high-risk environments — such as corporate espionage targets — may have genuine reasons to consider supplementary security tools. For the average everyday user sticking to mainstream apps, however, layering on a third-party antivirus typically adds more bloat than genuine protection.
The debate over whether Android users need antivirus software has persisted for years, and the answer has gradually shifted as Google has invested heavily in platform-level security. For the vast majority of Android users, third-party antivirus applications are largely redundant. Google Play Protect, which is baked directly into the Android ecosystem, automatically scans billions of apps daily and flags potentially harmful software before or after installation. Combined with app sandboxing — which limits how much access any single app has to the rest of the system — and regular OS security patches, the baseline protection available to modern Android users is considerably stronger than it was a decade ago. Third-party antivirus apps, in many cases, duplicate these efforts while consuming battery life, storage, and sometimes harvesting user data of their own, raising a certain irony about privacy-focused security tools. However, blanket dismissal of antivirus software ignores legitimate edge cases. Users who routinely sideload applications from unofficial sources bypass Play Protect's screening entirely, creating real exposure to malware. Similarly, devices running Android versions that no longer receive security updates — a significant concern given how fragmented the Android ecosystem remains — leave users vulnerable to known, unpatched exploits that a third-party scanner might catch. Journalists, activists, executives, and others who may be targeted by sophisticated adversaries also warrant a more cautious approach to device security. Why it matters: As smartphones become the primary computing device for billions of people worldwide, understanding the real versus perceived need for security software is increasingly important. Misleading marketing from antivirus vendors has long overstated Android's vulnerability to drive app downloads, sometimes at the expense of user privacy and device performance. Empowering users with accurate information helps them make smarter decisions — choosing targeted, legitimate tools only when genuinely necessary rather than defaulting to software that may cause more harm than good.
